SMOKE ALARM BATTERY POWERED

Models No.   C30M Mk2

WRS109 Mk2

A Smoke Alarm is an early warning device and when used correctly can give you and your family valuable time to escape.

Making the most of your Smoke Alarm

Put the Smoke Alarm as close as possible to the centre of the ceiling. When mounting Smoke Alarm in the ceiling, locate it a minimum of 6 inches (15cm) from a side wall and 2 feet (.61 cm) from any corner (See Diagram A).

When mounting Smoke Alarm on a wall, use an inside wall with the Smoke Alarm or a maximum of 6 inches (15cm) below the ceiling and at least 2 feet (.61 cm) from any corner (See Diagram A)

Test the Smoke Alarm every week: push the test switch button for 5 seconds until the alarm sounds

If the Smoke Alarm beeps every 45 seconds, it needs a new battery.

Installation

The Smoke Alarm comes complete with mounting kit. All you have to do is attach the mounting bracket to the surface with the screws provided. Then twist and lock the Smoke Alarm into place.

Test your Smoke Alarm

The Smoke Alarm has a test button. Press and hold it for up to 5 seconds and the Smoke Alarm should sound Release the button and it will stop. To be sure your Smoke Alarm is working, you should test it weekly.

In caravans, you should test the Smoke Alarm before each trip.

Warning: Never use an open flame to test the Smoke Alarm, or you could easily set fire to it - and your home.

NB:      If the Smoke Alarm doesn't work, make sure that the battery is fresh and properly connected and that the inside of the detector and the openings to the sensing chamber are clean. If you still have a problem, don't try and amend the Smoke Alarm or your Guarantee will be void. Simply write a note saying what's wrong with the defective Smoke Alarm and send the package to the address appearing on the back or this leaflet by courier at customer cost.

Smoke Alarm Maintenance

To keep the Smoke Alarm in sound working order, you should replace the battery once a year or immediately if the alarm beep sounds (lasts up to 30 days).

Clean the Smoke Alarm carefully at least once a year. Using a soft touch brush, remove any dust on the Smoke Alarm's cover especially those in the openings of the cover. And remember to replace the battery after cleaning.

A dusty or wrongly placed Smoke Alarm may give false alarms. If this happens, check "Where not to put the Smoke Alarms" and relocate it properly.

Recommended batteries:

Energizer#522, Duracell#MN 1604, Gold Peak #1604 P. They are available at electrical supplier or hardware store.

Limitation

High quality WORMALD smoke alarms have a service life in excess of ten years under normal use. We recommend to replace it no more than ten years to ensure maximum protection.

The smoke alarm can't...

·          Work without batteries or batteries that are dead or incorrectly put in. Sense a fire on another floor or when smoke can't reach the alarm so always place a Smoke Alarm on every floor.

·          Act as a substitute for insurance.

·          Operate if the battery is dead. Therefore the battery should be replaced at least once a year. If the battery is running low a warning signal will "beep" every 45 seconds and continue to do so for 30 days.

Strategic places for the Smoke Alarm

In bedrooms where:

1. A smoker sleeps

2. Where electric appliances such as heaters are switched on while people sleep and

3. Where people sleep with the door shut.

·          At both end's of a bedroom hallway when the hallway's over 960cm long.

·          At bottom of the basement stairs.

·          At the top of the first to second floor stairwell if no obstruction between smoke and Smoke Alarm.

·As close to the centre of the ceiling as possible; or at least no closer than .61cm to any wall or corner.

Making the most of your battery powered smoke detector

·          Draw a floor plan of your house. There should be at least two ways of getting out of each room; it should be possible to get out of every bedroom without using the door.

·          Have a fire drill every 6 months to make sure that everyone knows what to do.

·          Tell children about the Smoke Alarm and teach them how to get out of the building by themselves. Show them how to check if doors are hot before opening them, how to stay close to the door and crawl if necessary; how to use the alternative exit if the door is too hot to open.

·          Identify a meeting place safely away from your house, tell the children that they must wait there if ever there's a fire.

·          Find out where to call the Fire Brigade from outside your residence. Install emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers: teach everybody how to use these items.

What to do when there is a fire

1. Stay calm: think clearly, remember your fire drill

2. Use planned escape.

3. Feel doors first to see if they're hot. If they are, don't use them, use an alternative escape route instead.

4. Stay close to the floor: hot air rises.

 5. Cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth and take short shallow breaths.

 6. Keep doors and windows shut unless you need to open them to escape.

 7. Meet at your prearranged meeting point after leaving the house.

8. Call the Fire Brigade as soon as possible from     outside your home. Give your name and address.

 9. Never go back into a burning building. For more information about making your family and home safer from fire, contact your local Fire Brigade.

Where not to put your Smoke Alarm

·          Close to kitchens, garages, and bathrooms - rooms where the alarm may be triggered by local conditions. i.e. Steam or condensation, cooking fumes and fumes from vehicles.

·In damp or humid areas: closer than 240cm to bathrooms where steam can condense into droplets in the Smoke Alarm and set it off.

·In temperatures below 5°C or above 45C

·          Where there is dirt and dust which, by building up on the Smoke Alarm, makes it either hyper-sensitive or totally insensitive to smoke.

·In dead air spaces, generally occurs at the comers of walls (refer to Diagram A) or any A-frame roof (refer to Diagram B) as air pockets can develop preventing smoke from reaching the alarm.

·          In insect-infected areas; insects inside the sensing chamber can easily set off the Smoke Alarm.

·          Closer than 220mm to fluorescent light fixtures: their humming noise sometimes activates the Smoke Alarm.

·Near air vents, drafty windows or heaters: airflow may cause smoke to be driven away from the alarm.
